The Iowa State University and Drake University football players not only traded their pigskin for a basketball, but also played the game in wheelchairs! The Drake football players came ready to win again this year and Iowa State players gave them a good fight. Drake won the game with a score of 38 Drake and 20 Iowa State University. The players enjoyed their time supporting the local not for profit organization, Candeo, as they learned how to play basketball in the wheelchairs.

The very talented Sydney Lett, sang the National Anthem for the approximately 275 people that attended. Entertainment also included the Triad USAG Gymnastics Team routine in between the quarters. To help pump up the crowd, members of the High Voltage dance team along with mascot, Surge, from Iowa Energy throw out giveaways from sponsors of the event. At the end of the third quarter, client, Treasa  Bittner gave a powerful speech regarding her journey to independence with Candeo supports.

Guests were greeted by Denise Way and Erik Yamane who are supported by Candeo in her daily community living.  Their bright smiles were a warm welcome to all of our guests.

Lindsay Clark was also our guest speaker for the evening program along with her employer, Marla Earp of Treasure House, and father, Rick Clark. Marla and Lindsay gave a heartwarming speech about Lindsay’s employment success and independence at Treasure House. She appreciates having the opportunity to go to work and be successful in her community.Picture 094

Marla Earp told the crowd about her experience as last year’s Taste of Independence as a donor and guest. She listened to the speech given by the employer speaker and made it her professional goal to hire a Candeo client. Marla says Lindsay is a joy to work with and is always learning new tasks.

Picture 001 Another Candeo client, Chibuzor Ukabiala, touched many hearts as he shared his story of finding employment with the support of Candeo. He also shared that he was recently let go during a lay off at his company, but is looking for a new job.

Many clients contributed to the Taste of Independence not only as greeters and speakers, but as artist that donated silent auction items and attended the event with staff support or with family. Thank you to all of our clients and donors at Candeo for their help to make this memorable event a success.
